Maggies Centre, Velindre Hospital

Sector:       Healthcare
Client:         Maggies Centres
Services:    Cost Management
RPA have been honoured to work alongside Dow Jones Architects for the completion of the new South East Wales interim Cancer Support Centre for Maggies. Located at Velindre Hospital in Cardiff, the centre is a vital resource for people affected by Cancer, their families, carers and friends.

The scheme

The centre will be an interim facility, intended to be used for 10 years (though could be used indefinitely) until its permanent replacement, as part of the overall redevelopment of the hospital planned in 2023. As such cost control has been critical to delivering project requirements with the resources available.

The brief was the same as a regular Maggie’s centre but smaller, quicker and cheaper. The building is 240m2 as opposed to 350m2, modestly priced at around one third of the budget of the original building, and delivered in just sixteen months since choosing a site. It has been generously funded by the Welsh Government and other private funders.
