The Rest, Porthcawl

Sector:       Residential
Client:         Acorn Property Group
Dominating the Porthcawl skyline since it was built in 1878, The Rest is a grade II listed Victorian house which was historically a coal miners’ convalescence home. Derelict since 2013, the development saw the conversion of the original house into 34 apartments with a further 34 2 & 3 storey new build apartments in the grounds behind.

The scheme

Having such a wealth of knowledge on complex listed buildings RPA were appointed for this project.

Regeneration of the site was phased to prioritise roof repairs to the already dilapidated building, followed by demolitions of the unsympathetic extensions, damp repairs and asbestos strip out, latter stages involved the restoration and conversion of the main building alongside the construction of the 34 new build apartments.

RPA were extremely proud to work on this iconic restoration project which even boasts historic input from Florence Nightingale, who gave advice on the design of the new convalescent home and took a keen interest in the project during its original construction.
